Knock Back to Your Senses

This just in: A new headset designed by some of our friends from across the pond (or to be more specific a group of British academics from York and Warwick universities) has been released. According to an article posted on Mail Online the virtual reality helmet, affectionately named Virtual Cocoon, will transport the wearer using the power of five.

It mimics all five senses-- making its virtual world as convincing as real life. Wow that sounds fun! (With the potential to insight extreme terror: what if your African Safari trip goes haywire?) Apparently the virtual reality helmet titillates all five body senses while viewers sit at home on their sofas.
Couch potatoes rejoice? Hmm… I think despite trying to act excited about this incredibly impressive scientific advancement deep down I feel like we are losing ground. I want to be able to stimulate my senses naturally. Or maybe I mean organically.

While I am far from running through a field of flowers with hair cascading in the breeze and music notes drifting over the horizon, I have my ways of transporting myself. One technologically savvy pastime I enjoy is watching the talent and creativity of BYU design students and faculty who handcrafted this combination of typed letters and set to music. Do yourself a favor and watch this gem in full-screen!

A little background on this favorite video: it was created by Brigham Young University students as the opening titles for the 5th Typophile Film Festival and was posted by Brent Barson on Vimeo; I am bringing it to Flaherty’s Rarities since we all need a dose of inspiration once and a while.
